When it is recommended
- 1st trimester, 11–14 weeks: dating, nuchal translucency, nasal bone, early anatomy
- 2nd trimester, 18–21 weeks: detailed fetal anatomy and organs, placenta, fluid
- 3rd trimester, 30–34 weeks: fetal growth and position, placenta, fluid, Doppler
- Referral from an obstetrician
Preparation
The first screening through the abdomen may require a full bladder. No preparation is needed for the second and third. Bring your pregnancy record and previous results.
How it works
The scan is painless and safe. You lie on a couch while the doctor moves the probe with gel over the skin. Afterwards the doctor explains the results and gives a written report.
